Businesses trading internationally are being urged to prepare for significant updates to commodity codes set to take effect on 1 January 2028.
It remains the responsibility of each company, in line with HMRC requirements, to ensure the correct commodity codes are used on all exports and imports in accordance with the UK Trade Tariff. Accurate classification is essential for compliance, duty calculation, and smooth customs processes.
Training and Support Available
To support businesses, the Chamber offers a 3-hour training session focused on:
- Understanding commodity codes
- Navigating the UK Trade Tariff
Companies are strongly advised not to rely solely on suppliers, customers, or third parties when assigning commodity codes. While external input can provide a helpful starting point, the responsibility for verification always lies with the business.
