The Human Advantage: Why ‘Human-First’ Photography is Your Best Asset in the Age of AI
The conversation around Artificial Intelligence in business has shifted from the hypothetical to the essential. As we look ahead to the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce’s upcoming ‘Marketing Mix’ event on May 21st at Accrington Stanley, it’s clear that AI is no longer a futuristic concept – it’s an everyday tool.
With experts like Leon Calverley from Door4 sharing real-world AI systems, and Rob Hallam from Bigtank Video Productions exploring how to blend AI with human creativity, the focus for marketers is clear: we must make our content quicker and smarter, but it must remain uniquely true to our brand.
As a brand photographer working across Lancashire, this is a conversation I am incredibly passionate about. My entire business is built on the concept of Human-First Photography.
AI can write your copy, generate ideas, and streamline your workflow, but the one thing it absolutely cannot do is build genuine, human trust. In an era where consumers are increasingly wary of deepfakes, heavy filters, and AI-generated imagery, showing the real, beautifully unpolished people behind your business is your ultimate competitive advantage.
Yet, when it comes to booking a brand or team photoshoot, many business leaders still view it with absolute dread. We assume it has to be a stiff, highly-posed, “corporate mugshot” exercise, but if your team feels awkward in front of the lens, your future clients will feel that awkwardness when they look at your website.
A human-first approach throws that corporate rulebook out the window. When I recently worked with Lisa Sourbutts and the fantastic team at Cube HR in Burnley, the goal was to capture fresh, natural headshots that reflected their famously warm, approachable culture. We completely ditched the pressure by taking the time to plan and focusing on making the team feel comfortable as humans first, and subjects second, the nerves vanished.
As Lisa noted:
“The day was great and easy going. We didn’t feel awkward and we got some amazing shots that are now used with pride on our website.” This is the essence of a true “Visual Handshake.”
It gives your prospects a completely accurate preview of what it feels like to work with you – something no algorithm can replicate.
3 Ways to Adopt a Human-First Visual Strategy in 2026:
1. Use AI for the Process, Humans for the Picture: Let AI help you plan your shoot shot-list or schedule your social media, but make sure the faces in your feed are 100% genuine.
2. Ditch the Desk: Stop relying on photos of your team staring blankly at computer screens. Show them interacting, laughing, or in a relaxed environment. Authentic human connection stops the scroll.
3. Prioritise Comfort: If your team hates having their photo taken, work with visual partners who take the pressure off and treat the session like a “brew and a chat.” Genuine confidence sells better than a forced smile.
I am very much looking forward to joining Rob, Leon, Sarah and the rest of the ELCC team at the Marketing Mix event on the 21st to hear how other local businesses are navigating the AI landscape.
If you see me there, come say hi! and don’t worry, my human-first rule means I promise I won’t have my camera pointing at you!
