Carolann Thompson, a long-time supporter of East Lancashire Hospice, is taking on an extraordinary challenge, walking 800 miles over 10 months to raise money for the hospice. She has chosen to walk 800 miles to reflect the daily cost of the Inpatient Unit, which costs £800 per day for just one patient’s care.

Carolann explained:

“You can’t just turn the hospice off. The illnesses don’t take a day off, so I won’t be taking a day off from this challenge.”

Her connection to the hospice is deeply personal. Carolann’s Uncle Eddie received care from East Lancashire Hospice in 2016, as did her grandad in 2023. She has seen first-hand the impact East Lancashire Hospice can have for those who access it’s services.

Carolann’s connection with the hospice deepens further; her good friend Irene accessed the hospice’s services for several years before she died in 2024. Forty years her senior, Irene was an incredible women and source of wisdom, deeply inspiring Carolann.

Supporting Irene in her final months strengthened their bond, and this became the driving force behind Carolann’s challenge. At the end of 2024, Irene’s son, Luke, Carolann’s business partner and best friend, was diagnosed with cancer, which has spurred her goals still further. In memory of Irene, both Luke and Carolann are also taking part in this year’s Corporate Challenge with their business, Amplify Success.

Carolann is currently accessing the hospice Bereavement service. She explained:

“Through Bereavement support, I have learnt it’s ok to put myself first. I am the type of person who will always have time for anyone, but this walking challenge is time for me.”

Through her 800-mile challenge, Carolann has strengthened her personal network, making new friends on her early morning walks and strengthening long-term friendships with lengthy weekend hikes. Carolann noted:

“I don’t have the best knees in the world and the miles have caused me some pain, but it’s nothing in comparison to what the families here at the hospice go through.”

Even with her injury, she will be continuing the challenge.

Carolann wanted to take time to thank her husband, family and friends who have been a great support network for her throughout this challenge.
