The East Lancashire Hospice’s 60 Miles in March challenge was a fantastic success, with more than 2,000 miles walked and over £6,000 raised to support patient care. This challenge saw 37 participants walk 60 miles within the month of March, all in aid of East Lancashire Hospice.

Among these walkers, three members of their community went above and beyond, either by exceeding the 60-mile goal or by raising an incredible amount of sponsorship.

First up is Louise Baron, who began her journey with East Lancashire Hospice during a college work experience placement in the kitchen and has since taken on a Kitchen Assistant role. Since then, she has never looked back and has dedicated 21 years to the hospice with enthusiasm and care.

One of Louise’s most treasured memories is the care her father received at the hospice before his passing, allowing them a chance to reconnect. Her grandad also benefited from the hospice’s services. To commemorate her 21 years of service, Louise completed an incredible 100 miles during the March challenge. We’re proud to celebrate her continued commitment and compassion.

Next, we have Mark Johnson, whose connection to the hospice began when his father received care on the Inpatient Unit 14 years ago. Since then, Mark has remained a loyal supporter, especially as more friends and loved ones have accessed hospice services over the years.

Mark took on the 60 Miles in March Challenge, raising an impressive £1,764.39. He joked that

“the hardest part was finding the time to do it.”

Thankfully, his team at Foggarties Insurance were fully behind him, even allowing longer lunch breaks so he could clock up his miles.

His creative fundraising idea, a social media campaign called ‘Pay me a pound and I’ll tell you why you’re sound,’ saw Mark sharing heartfelt compliments with every donation.

When asked why he continues to support the hospice, Mark described it as

“very rewarding, it fills my soul. It’s nice to take a step back from work and home life and not be so blinkered.”

At Foggarties, he’s helping shape a workplace culture of giving. The team is currently participating in the Corporate Challenge, even competing with his former employer, DES Group! From senior management to junior staff, everyone is involved.

Mark is also passionate about instilling these values at home:

“I’ve even got my sons involved. At 16 and 18, I want them to grow up with strong morals and a sense of community.”

Last but certainly not least, we’d like to highlight Richard Sutlieff, whose family ties to East Lancashire Hospice run deep. His uncle, Ivan Hunt, was the hospice’s first Chairman 40 years ago and inspired Richard to get involved. Richard began as a volunteer, later joining the original committee, and eventually became one of the first trustees.

Richard’s connection is also deeply personal; his mother received care at the hospice before she died, and the experience solidified his commitment to its mission.

Richard completed double the challenge, walking an amazing 120 miles throughout March, even fitting in hikes while on holiday!

We are incredibly grateful to Louise, Mark, Richard and all 37 amazing participants who took part in this year’s challenge.
