The UK government has announced that LITE (Licensing for International Trade and Export) will replace SPIRE, the existing export licensing system.

This transition is aimed at providing businesses with a more efficient, modern, and user-friendly platform for applying for and managing export licences.

Key Reasons for the Change:

  •  Modernisation & Improved Usability – LITE introduces an intuitive design and enhanced functionality, making it easier for businesses to navigate the system.
  • Better Integration & Compliance – The new platform aligns with evolving regulations and ensures greater compliance with international trade policies.
  • Enhanced Processing & Decision-Making – Advanced automation and data analysis tools will speed up application processing and improve decision-making efficiency.

What Does This Means for Businesses:

  • Faster and more efficient licensing applications – LITE aims to reduce wait times and improve overall processing speeds.
  • More user-friendly navigation and submission process – The platform simplifies the steps required to apply for licences, ensuring a smoother experience.
  • Better visibility of application progress and history – Users can track their applications in real time and access historical data for reference.

LITE is part of the UK government’s digital transformation strategy, reinforcing a more resilient and responsive export control system.

The transition marks a significant step towards streamlining trade operations and ensuring UK businesses have the tools they need to succeed in the global market.

Important: As of 6 March 2025:

  1. Standard Individual Export Licences are applied for on LITE.
  2. SPIRE remains live and all other non-Standard Individual Export Licence applications should continue to be applied for on SPIRE for the time being.
