Magdalena Nowicka Mook, CEO of the International Coaching Federation, sets out the most recent statistics around women in leadership and her tips and experience on what really makes the difference when women are on the career ladder.

It was validating for Katy Mason and me to see that she is advocating the very elements that we include in our Women’s Leadership Academy RISE programme, delivered by us and East Lancashire Chamber.

She talks about the importance of authenticity, resilience, support networks and being confident enough to say ‘no’.

Our programme is all about being the real you: starting with DISC profiling, and really understanding yourself, and recognising that women’s emotional intelligence is key to 21st-century leadership.

We return again and again to the importance of building resilience and managing stress as women negotiate the balance between career development and personal life. We teach women the Heartmath and Leadership Embodiment techniques to do this.

We discuss support networks, both at work and beyond, the importance of coaching, mentoring and sponsorship, and bring in amazing speakers who share their experiences of best practice.

We equip our delegates with a toolkit of leadership models, coaching skills, and physical and mental competencies to ensure they are courageous enough to both step out of their comfort zones into ‘stretch’, but also to say ‘no’ when they should.

Being with a group of like-minded women who share experiences and issues has enabled our first cohort of delegates to raise issues at work such as pay imbalances, mentoring support, being heard at board meetings, and being expected to work evenings or on their days off. They have been able to prepare themselves for difficult conversations with their teams and design relationships that work for themselves and others. They have learned as much from each other as they have from Katy and me, and we are extremely proud of them all.

The 2nd cohort of RISE launches on 2 April, and the six-month (one day per month) programme is filling fast. If you are a woman on the career ladder or you’re a business leader wanting to support your female managers and directors, please book a call with me or @christine lambe to find out more about the RISE programme, the only programme of its kind in the North of England.
