The government has today signed off the agreement to establish a combined county authority in Lancashire.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said:
‘I’m delighted that we’ve been able to mark another moment in Lancashire’s rich history by agreeing the first steps of its devolution journey. This agreement will empower local leaders to make key decisions locally, and ensure they have a say on how to shape the future of their area instead of having it imposed on them from Westminster.”
Miranda Barker OBE, CEO of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, commented:
“It’s an exciting moment in Lancashire’s history and evolution to see investment and the beginnings of control of our own destiny come to the County – we now need to see this self determination accelerate and Lancashire progress to be a leading light in devolved areas and bring enhanced investment and economic benefit to both the local community and the national economy.”
For Lancashire, a combined county authority will be established in early 2025, and handed the responsibility for adult education. Ministers are encouraging local leaders to deepen this devolution deal and take strides towards mayoral devolution as a gold standard.
Subject to parliamentary approval and local consent, the devolution agreement will mean local leaders can make decisions that benefit their community and harness the unique opportunities of their area.
