On 5th February, the Government launched its Workplace Charging Scheme grant which will heavily discount the cost of EV (electric vehicle) charge point installations for state-funded education institutions.

A generous discount of 75% off the cost of buying and installing charge points will be provided under the grant, up to £2500 per socket for a maximum of 40 sockets across all sites.

With the opportunity to generate much needed revenue from EV charge points, the grant offers exceptional benefits to education providers beyond the green agenda. Tariffs for using the EV charge points can be set to each site’s preferred values and be changed instantly if required. Multi tariffs can be set so that staff pay less than visitors. The education provider has complete control over how the revenue is generated.

Light on eligibility criteria, the grant is available to the majority of state-funded schools, academy trusts, colleges and universities. One significant item of eligibility is that the education institution must have had a site survey by an authorised installer who has confirmed that EV charging can be supported.

AMP EV are specialists in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of EV charge points across the UK. The company carries out free site surveys to determine whether EV charge points can be installed.

Managing Director of AMP EV, Alasdair Croft, said:

“I’m rather shocked by the generosity of this grant. I would implore state-funded education providers to book a free site survey to understand how an EV charge point installation can benefit the institution, both financially and operationally.

“Funding is only available until March 2025 so I would strongly urge both councils and education providers to act quickly to take advantage of this grant.”

To easily manage the generation of revenue, AMP EV provide a user-friendly back office system to all customers that provides billing and revenue control and reporting. All charge points are managed from a single system.

AMP EV are no strangers to the education sector. As proud partners of Southport College, the company co-designed a curriculum that develops the skills, knowledge and behaviours that students need when learning about emerging technologies. AMP EV also delivered two phases of EV charge point installations at Lancaster University, taking the site to 50 EV chargers.
