Commenting on the news of the agreement on UK participation in Horizon Europe, William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:
“The BCC has been making the case for some time that the best future for investment and international collaboration in our key sciences, higher education and research sectors is with Horizon Europe.
“If an Associate Membership deal for the UK is confirmed, this will provide much needed certainty and kickstart new research opportunities for key strength areas of the UK economy, such as life sciences.
“This could include funding and cross-border partnerships with other European scientists and researchers – generating the discoveries and economic growth of tomorrow.
“The BCC has been calling for a speedy resolution of these negotiations in both our recent Trade Manifesto and The Power of Business documents.
“We also know the EU is already developing a successor scheme (Framework Programme 10), to be introduced in 2028. If a new deal is agreed, then we must use it as a springboard to ensure our involvement in this next stage.
“The UK and EU can then forge closer co-operation on science, innovation and research to take on the challenges of the next few decades.”
