As part of the ongoing adjustment process, businesses trading from Great Britain (GB) to Northern Ireland (NI) must comply with a set of customs and regulatory requirements. These measures are designed to simplify trade while ensuring adherence to both UK and EU rules.

Here’s an overview of the current key requirements for exporters:

  1. UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS)

For goods deemed “not at risk” of entering the EU (i.e., goods that remain in NI), businesses must be registered under the UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS). Registration allows goods to move through the green lane, which simplifies customs procedures and eliminates the need for EU duties. Once authorised under UKIMS, businesses should enter their UKIMS authorisation number on their Trader Support Service (TSS) account to ensure smooth processing.

  1. Full Customs Requirements for Non-UKIMS Goods

Goods not moving under the UKIMS must follow full international customs procedures. This means they will be processed through the red lane, with customs declarations, checks, and potential duty tariffs as per the EU rules.

  1. “Not for EU” Labelling

Certain goods, particularly food products, milk, and dairy, must now include the “Not for EU” label when moving from GB to NI. This ensures goods intended solely for the NI market are clearly distinguished from those intended for export to the EU.

New parcel procedures under the Windsor Framework will take effect from 1st May 2025.
