Following confirmation on 10th January 2025 by the German Chief Veterinary Officer of a detection of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in a herd of farmed water buffalo, Germany has now lost its FMD free status.

As of 15 January, it is no longer permitted to bring meat, meat products, milk and dairy products, into Great Britain from Germany.

The commercial import of cattle, pigs, sheep, deer, buffaloes and their products such as meat, and dairy from Germany will now be banned. GB health certificates will no longer be issued for animals susceptible to FMD including all live animals, fresh meat and animal products.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, pigs and other cloven-hoofed animals that causes significant production losses in affected animals, including reduced milk and meat yields. It also disrupts international trade, as countries impose strict restrictions on the import of livestock and animal products from affected regions.

While FMD poses a serious threat to livestock industries, it does not infect humans and does not present any food safety risks. Nevertheless, the outbreak has prompted heightened monitoring and containment measures to prevent further spread within Germany and beyond.

Authorities are urging farmers and veterinary professionals to remain vigilant and report any signs of illness in livestock immediately.
