In April 2023, the UK Government published a draft ‘Border Target Operating Model’, applicable to imports from all countries into Great Britain, including the EU.

In it, the Government outlined how their proposals sought to balance the need for effective border controls with the need to support businesses with import processes that are as simple as possible. They explained that with their new approach, they would harness their new freedom to set their own border policy and integrate the technological transformations set out in the 2025 UK Border Strategy.

Following extensive input and feedback, the Government have released the publication of the Border Target Operating Model Plan – August 2023 – a must read for all UK Importers and Exporters.

Mandy Lockett, International Business Director at the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, comments:

“Our Customs Agents are now dissecting the Border Target Operating Model Plan (BTOM) to understand its impact for all our clients.

“We will be contacting all our importers and exporters over the coming weeks to inform them of any changes required in order for their shipments to continue to move through Customs safely and quickly.

“We’ll also be hosting a seminar to help companies understand BTOM which complements the wide range of Importing and Exporting courses we deliver to help businesses trade internationally.”
