Please see below an urgent announcement that we have received from HMRC regarding Customs Declarations.

In summary, the free CHIEF training service provided for traders, declarants and intermediaries is closing from 10am on Tuesday 5 July 2022, and HMRC will stop receiving new registrations for new Importers for CHIEF from this date.  New Importers will not be authorised to use simplified import declarations on CHIEF from 10am on 5 July 2022.  They will now need to apply to do so via the Customs Declaration Service.

Existing importers can continue to make import declarations until CHIEF closes after 30 September 2022.  Thereafter, all import declarations must be made using CDS.  But there is no need for you to worry, as the team here have been using CDS all year to submit your Customs Declarations.  For our esteemed customers, we have tailored a checklist outlining the specific requirements which your business needs to take in readiness for this change – this was emailed on the 7 June 2022 titled ‘Urgent action required for your import and exports’.  To request this tailored  checklist again, contact or ring Marie on 01254 356448.

On a more general note and outlined by HMRC, to use CDS there are a number of actions that you need to take now.

To register to use CDS you will need to log into your Government Gateway account and provide:

  1. Your EORI number that starts with GB.
  2. Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
  3. The address for your business that we hold on our customs records.
  4. National Insurance number (for individuals or sole traders only)
  5. The date you started your business.
  6. Your email address.

Once registered:

✓ You will be able to access your Financial Dashboard.
✓ You will be able to access the Secure File Upload Service if you need to send
HMRC supporting documents, like licences or certificates of origin.
× Registering doesn’t provide access to submit a declaration.

CDS operates differently to CHIEF, as your customs agent we can help you to understand the new data elements, the CDS tariff, how to operate your CDS deferment account and how the cash account system works.

We can help you to navigate the changes ahead – we are ready for CDS, are you?
