Member News – How Blackburn Rovers are supporting Ramadhan & Saffron Group’s Fast For One Day

Published On: April 16th, 2021

With Ramadhan well underway for Muslims across the world, Backburn Rovers FC release the following information for those taking part, or those wishing to support Muslim colleagues and employees, with details of The Saffron Group’s Fast For One Day.

Timing of Ramadhan

The Islamic calendar is a lunar 12 month calendar consisting of 354/355 days. The lunar calendar has about 11 days less than the Gregorian calendar so every year Ramadhan (which is the 9th month in the Islamic calendar) will start 10-11 days before the previous year.

Fasting

In the month of Ramadhan nearly 2 Billion Muslims across the world will fast (no food or drink) from pre-dawn until Sunset, so fasts are a lot longer in the Summer months compared to winter months. If you live in Iceland you’ll be fasting for 21 hours in the Summer months as the sun doesn’t set until midnight!

The first fast in the UK will be from 4:30am until 8:15pm. By the end of the 30 days the fasts will be from 3:20am until 9:10pm (18 hours).

Charity and giving to those who are less fortunate is a big part of Ramadhan. In 2020 UK Muslims donated more than £150million combined to charity.

A Day in Ramadhan

If you have Muslim friends/colleagues/business associates it’s helpful to show awareness of how Ramadhan may affect them. It can take a couple of days to adjust, and after a couple of days you may feel more energetic and alert. However it’s not just the fasting to consider – during the Ramadhan there are early starts for many, ensuring there is time to eat before then praying the morning prayer. Muslims have to pray 5 obligatory prayers every day.

How Rovers are taking part and supporting the community

BRFC will be posting Ramadhan Kareem messaging across Rovers’ social media. If you have Muslim friends, colleagues etc. it would be good to send them a “Ramadhan Mubarak / Ramadhan Kareem” message – it’s a bit like wishing someone Merry Christmas. Similarly at the end of Ramadhan, Muslims celebrate Eid where families usually get together to eat and share presents with children.

Other ways you can take part:

Saffron Fast for One Day

A big part of Ramadhan for Muslims is giving in charity to those less fortunate. By fasting for one day we want you to take part in the act of giving.

Last year over £10k was raised by The Saffron Group for NHS Charities Together. This year the chosen charity is Young Minds. Mental Health has affected a lot more people during COVID and we want to help raise awareness and support a fantastic charity working with young people.

You can choose any charity of your choice when you fast4oneday but if you want to support the chosen charity please do so here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/saffron-groupfast-4oneday
