Inspirational Lecturer at UCB (University Courses Burnley) earns Golden Rose for Creative Teaching

An inspirational and dynamic Lecturer at UCB (University Courses Burnley), who regularly fires his undergraduates’ curiosity with innovative teaching methods using, among other things, golf balls, Lego and the very latest IT, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Rose for Creative Teaching after being nominated by his students.

And the honour – in the Golden Rose Awards from the University of Central Lancashire – is all-the-more impressive as Jonny Martin has been lecturing in his specialist subject for less than a year!

The Golden Rose Awards allow students to recognise their Lecturers’ achievements and Jonny’s award for Creative Teaching was presented to him online by Stephanie Lomas, of UCLan’s Students’ Union, who confirmed he beat more than 100 other entrants to scoop the title.

Nominated by UCB undergraduates in the second year of their degree studies in the School of Business and Management, Jonny has already built a strong reputation for bringing a creative and fresh approach to his lectures and keeps students’ attention as they say ‘you never know what he is going to do next!’

Lecturer Jonny Martin said:

“I am truly honoured to receive this Golden Rose Award: it is extra-special as I was nominated by students. It’s nice to know the different teaching methods I’m introducing in the degree-level courses in the School of Business and Management are making an impact.

“Lessons that are both creative and engaging”

“As a former mature student myself, I know how important it is to have lessons that are both creative and engaging. I can identify with many of our UCB undergraduates who are returning to study after a break which is why I use creative techniques to bring lectures, workshops and tutorials to life. Gone are the days of classic university lectures – my remit is to build skills appropriate for modern business and develop our students for their future careers in business and management.”

Emma Hurst, Dean of UCB, which has its base at the heart of Burnley College’s £100 million town centre Campus, said:

“I am delighted to learn of Jonny’s success which is testament to the strong rapport he has built with his students so quickly.

“He brings a dynamic digital approach to university-level studies and can really engage with his students, empowering them with the skills and knowledge which can transform their lives – both in their degree studies and their careers.

“His success reflects his commitment to ensure his undergraduates are ‘career-ready’ on completion of their degrees, which is at the very heart of UCB.”
