#myOlympicwish launched for children to show support to athletes for Rio 2016
With 500 days to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the nation’s youth are being given the chance to have their messages of good luck featured in Team GB’s suits for the Olympic Games via a competition launched today (24th March 2015).
The #myOlympicwish competition was launched by gymnast Beth Tweddle and school children from Altham Primary School at the Accrington offices of Simon Jersey, official supplier to Team GB.
The young people are being invited to send in messages of support that will be woven into the lining of suits being designed by Simon Jersey for athletes to wear to all formal events in Rio and the UK. This will include the Team GB Reception which will be hosted in Rio in advance of the Opening Ceremony.
Simon Jersey is working with the BOA’s Get Set programme, to reach over 25,000 schools to gather, nationwide support.
A selection of the messages will be used within the suits to help give athletes an extra boost.
Beth, who competed in three Olympics Games, will use her experience of preparing for an Olympic Games to help judge the entries alongside Simon Jersey and Team GB officials.
“As an athlete, particularly at an away Games – it gives you a huge boost to know that the nation is behind you and having the messages inside the suits will make sure athletes feel the support of everyone back home.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what young people come up with and the good wishes that will help inspire our team.”
The young people who write the winning messages will receive a framed sample of the finished fabric, plus the chance to meet athletes wearing the finished suits next year.
Simon Jersey is supplying both the formal suit and the clothing for the Closing Ceremony of Rio 2016. The final design is set to be unveiled early in 2016.
James Saunders, Simon Jersey managing director, said:
“We really wanted young people to be able to contribute to the design of the suits and to let the athletes know they’re supporting them.
“From urging athletes to run faster to letting them know how much support they have at home, we’d like to include wishes that show the enthusiasm of the nation’s youth. We’ll include as many messages as we can in the lining of the suits which will be unveiled early in 2016.”
#myOlympicwish is open to young people aged 16 or under, with permission from a parent or guardian. To send their message of support, in 20 words or less, the applicants should visit www.simonjersey.com/myolympicwish and submit before 00:59pm on Friday 1st May 2015.
