Think of the USA as 50 separate countries each with their own culture and market specialisms. That’s the message the 60 plus delegates representing a diverse cross section of East Lancashire’s top companies took away from last weeks International Trade Expo Doing Business in the United States of America.

Speaking at the event, Helen Cowley, Tax Partner at Cassons said:
I was keen to emphasise to the delegates that when establishing a presence in the US, it is important to get the location and structure right from the outset, and once the location has been identified, it is important to take professional advice on the structure including legal and tax matters. This fundamental message was certainly picked up by the audience and I was very pleased to have follow up discussions on the topic with a number of delegates. It’s great that we can talk to companies from across East Lancashire who have the ambition and passion to look at exporting to the US!”

The Chamber is very grateful to the international line up of speakers who had made themselves available and travelled from across the UK to speak and then offer support to businesses considering or already selling into the US marketplace. The impressive line-up of speakers including Dr Frank Levene, Director, Business Development UK & Europe from Avitus Group who gave an overview of the US market plus informing the delegates as to how they could effectively sell there. Nadeem Memon, Finance & IT Manager, at Panaz then explained how his company had entered the US market sharing tips on how to watch the time zones and local differences in culture between each state. During the morning break the delegates had the chance to view the exhibition stands set up in two exhibition rooms plus grab a drink in specially commissioned cups thanks to the Printed Cup Company and chat to the speakers. Kicking off the second half of the morning Helen Cowley, Tax Partner from International Trade Club Sponsor, Cassons guided the audience on the best way to comply with the US tax system. The theme of compliance continued with DSV’s Business Development Manager, Simon Booth revealing how to comply with the US import regulations as well as getting your goods to the market as quickly and cost effectively as possible. Chamber FX specialist John Sawyer from MoneyCorp, advised businesses on the most efficient way to avoid costly foreign exchange rate charges. Rounding off the series of presentations, East Lancashire’s ERDF Advisor, Stef Heywood highlighted how companies could make best use of the 12 hours of tailored support and 50% match funded grant worth up to £1500 could most effectively be spent. The speakers and delegates then broke off for a US themed lunch, round of individual meetings with the speakers plus the chance to visit the exhibition stands, network and share best practice.
