Commenting on Business Secretary Sajid Javid MP’s speech at Conservative Party Conference, John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

“In a highly political speech, Sajid Javid made a play for the hearts and minds of British businesspeople. His ambition for a low-tax, low-regulation economy, built on trade and exports, is crucial to future growth – but must be delivered in practice.

“After years of global corporate scandals, Javid is right to say that a capitalist economy needs high business standards to continue to enjoy the consent of the society in which it operates. Even in a red-blooded entrepreneurial environment, there is no room for poor corporate governance or practice.

“Javid’s robust position on European reform chimes with sentiment from companies large and small across the UK. They want tangible change, both for the whole of the EU and for Britain’s place in it. It is now up to the government that Mr Javid represents to set out what those changes will be – so that they can be held accountable by the British people in the forthcoming referendum.”
